From time to time I would like to write in English.
My English isn’t perfect at all (I’ve never been living abroad) but if I don’t use it it will get worse.

Getting old
(German translation below)
A few days ago I participated in a final season meeting of our sports-group.
After the party a young participant and I helped the organiser to bring the beer garden benches back to where we lent them.
The Club house has been closed, so we had to move the things over an iron gate. We were urged to climb over it.
What looked quite simple turned out to be rather difficult for a 64-old guy like me. I guess I didn’t do such a thing for at least 40 years.
Afterwards I felt heavily affected. I thought: How on earth did I perform so poorly? My self-image had been quite a different one. I thought that I would still be physically fit – and somewhat young. This incident taught me that I had been wrong.
Nevertheless I decided yesterday to work a bit again on my fitness.
I did a running exercise on my treadmill, which I use seldomly these days. I started with 22 min and 22 sec. Today i did an exercise for 33 min and 33 sec.
From now on I will try to do some exercises on a nearly daily basis. At least 4 days a week.
Nevertheless I feel it is necessary to acknowlege with a light heart that I’m not young anymore. 🙂

Well done, the Story! I am wondering, why you had never been abroad! For me, being about your age, that would be not thinkable, for the experiences of other countries have been the most challenging and heartfilling of my life. Using their languages as well, the sounds around, well I live in a movie…

Actually, I had been in different countries, but only for two weeks. To live abroad is a different thing. That never happened.
Thank you for the nice comment!

Great post and a nice reminder start to get more active on a regular base.
Also … thanks for unintentionally ‘pushing’ me to start with my english blog. Something I’m procrastinating for quite a while now. 😊

Why did you procrastinate it? Because you were thinking your English isn’t good enough?
Two native speakers told me that my English is “readable”. That’s an invitation to do it more often. 🙂

Certainly, and it will get better on the way. 😊
My procrastination is time based. I would love to have my entire blog in English as well. So, I would have to translate everything … just a matter of time.

You can do a german excerpt of that what you write in English. That’s the way to do it, I think.

Yeah, maybe … I haven’t figured the details out yet. However, I already have purchased the domain 🙂

What are exactly your plans? Do you want to reach a larger audience?
As for me, I would like to offer readable prose to two of my english readers. And to strengthen my knowledge of English.

I guess I would just love to write in different languages, preferably Turkish and English in addition to German. Sure, it would reach a broader audience (and my friends from different countries can read the blog content without electronic translation), but the intention is not to lose language skills on focusing on just one language.

Yeah, you’re right. Therefore I should use French again! 🙂
Main reason for not working on the languages for a long time had been some sort of dialect: I pronounce some letters badly.

actually it is like this: not only the mind needs input regularly, but also the body. so it’s a good idea to start right now doing some exercise.
why did you never travel abroad?
have a nice day. enjoy your exercise, be gentle with your body. don’t exercise too much.

I travelled abroad several times for just 2 weeks, but never studied or worked in the U.S.
I won’t overdo my exercises, for sure.
Actually I did exercises regularily 3 years ago, but only walking and such things. I never climbed on an iron gate or such a thing. 🙂

I do not wish to comment on your fitness. We all are getting older and have to live with the consequences of aging. However, what impressed me was your ability to write your story in English so well as if you had spent some time in an English speaking country. Also when you are responding to my posts, I notice the ease with which you express yourself in English. Congratulations, Gerhard!

You are very kind, Peter!
I can express myself in English, but not without (at least) minor mistakes such as wrong tenses..
What I’m trying to achieve is to keep my mastering of English on a certain Level. The same with chess, reading books and so on.

Your method to keep your skills at a certain acceptable level is a good one. Best wishes!

Yes, it’s “at” – thank you for your correction. 🙂
In german I use the Expression “köcheln”: All the years I kept my chess at a certain level just to be able to play it again in team-championships or tournaments – after retirement.

Don’t worry, be happy 🙂 .
